Botero Square

Over the weekend we ventured beyond our neighborhood for the first time. We took the subway downtown to a square full of sculptures by the Colombian artist Fernando Botero.

When it's not raining there's only a tiny stream here.

Medellin is close enough to the equator that it's basically 80 degrees every day year round. We got here for the last few weeks of "winter," which means it's 80 degrees and rains sometimes. We've gone on two outings now, and here's how it works: We get up to a beautiful, sunny day for an outing; I put on sun lotion, which makes the clouds come in over the mountains; it pours down rain while we get to where we're going; the crowds clear out because of the rain, and we arrive at our destination just as the weather is clearing! (Then it pours some more later.)

On one side of the square is a museum (Museo de Antioquia) that has even more Botero sculptures and many of his paintings.

Didn't get these artists' names. Sorry!

It was pouring again and we were getting hungry, so we got lunch at a little cafe in the museum.

On their tiny menu they had veggie burgers! It was a good day.
