Dan had to come to Guatemala for a couple of months for work, so rather than be apart for so long, we decided to rent an apartment in Antigua for the summer. Dan works in different areas of the country during the week, and we have weekends together. The kids have been going to language school during the week (one-on-one Spanish tutoring for four hours each morning), and I've been writing and working on chaplaincy papers/research and hanging laundry on the roof of our apartment building!
Antigua is in the mountains and sits below three volcanoes (one of which has been lightly erupting pretty much daily since we've been here!). The town has been preserved in the Colonial style, including cobblestone streets. They're not as smooth and romantic as they sound! We usually walk between five and eight miles a day around town, and we've learned how to find the less jarring places to walk. It's about a 20-minute walk from our apartment to the central square, Parque Central, and another five minutes to the grocery store. We can only buy as much as we can carry home, so we end up going to the store almost every day.

Antigua is a tourist destination because of it's Colonial architecture and history, but it's also famous for its dozens of language schools. A lot of tourists stay longer to improve their Spanish. Here are some pictures around town and of the language school the kids are attending.

Really lovely. I am surprised by the colonial architecture. Don't know what I was thinking it looked like but it wasn't that!
