I told my sister I'd write a new poem today. Tomorrow will be our fourth snow day in a week. Voila!
~ Snow Day
We stayed
home today
and so did our neighbors,
our mail carrier, our children’s teachers,
our employers, our auto mechanic, our dentist.
The rain came before the ice came before the snow
came before the wind came before the irritation,
the bickering, the wrestling, the crying,
the stomping, the sighing, the bundling,
the shoveling, the sledding, the snowballs,
the crying, the bickering, the stomping,
the wet boots gloves coats hats by the front door,
the hot chocolate, the quiet, the reading,
the smell of chili on the stove and cornbread in the oven,
the new snow lightly falling,
the phone call from the district
declaring another snow day for tomorrow,
the sighing, the glance heavenward, the announcement,
the cheering, the dancing, the retreating to screens,
the spreading of the news,
and so did our neighbors,
our mail carrier, our children’s teachers,
our employers, our auto mechanic, our dentist.
The rain came before the ice came before the snow
came before the wind came before the irritation,
the bickering, the wrestling, the crying,
the stomping, the sighing, the bundling,
the shoveling, the sledding, the snowballs,
the crying, the bickering, the stomping,
the wet boots gloves coats hats by the front door,
the hot chocolate, the quiet, the reading,
the smell of chili on the stove and cornbread in the oven,
the new snow lightly falling,
the phone call from the district
declaring another snow day for tomorrow,
the sighing, the glance heavenward, the announcement,
the cheering, the dancing, the retreating to screens,
the spreading of the news,
the new poem,
the bottle of wine.
